According to Sahara Reporters, the decision by the Speaker to step down was reached after a closed door meeting with Governor Seriake Dickson, Kemesuode Wodu, the Attorney-General of the State, and the legal team of Benson.

While the embattled Speaker continued his consultations with his legal team and other stakeholders to secure his plum position, pressure continued to mount among second term members for the need for a replacement and election of a more substantive speaker.
Benson who had earlier refused to vacate the seat, chaired the House that received the 2016 Appropriation Bill of the state government from Governor Seriake Dickson.
The embattled Spaeker, who represents Southern Ijaw Constituency 4 on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was sacked by the Appeal Court on December 9 after a judgment delivered set aside the decision of the tribunal which had earlier upheld his election.
In the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which was based on the appeal filed by Ebifieghe Orunimigha, the APC candidate in the State House of Assembly election, ordered that the election of Benson as the purported winner of the Bayelsa state House of Assembly elections held on April 11, 2015, was null and void.
The Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba,‎ Justice Ejembi Eko, and Justice Stephen Jonah Adam, ordered a fresh election in all the wards of the constituency within 90 days from today except in the Olodiama Ward Four and the polling unit 20-30 in Foropa Ward 4.
Meanwhile, the home of the  former Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly in Korokorosie in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state was bombed.
Benson, who disclosed this in a live telephone radio programme on Thursday, January 7, alleged that assailants wearing hoods threw dynamites into his compound and destroyed part of his house.
